Romanticism Style
The Kiss, (1859)
Painted by:
Francesco Paolo Hayez
The Hay Wain (1821)
Painted by:
John Constable
These two paintings are some of the most famous paintings of the Romantic Style. The Kiss is and Italian painting and the Hay Wain is an English painting.
The Kiss is a depiction of naturalism and love. This painting is an example of the Italian national liberation.
The painter wanted it to depict not just the love the two have for each other but also the love they have for there homeland. I feel the love that is expressed in this painting. You can see the passion the two have for each other. The artist
Hayez is known for romantic Italian paintings. This was by far his own favorite. I feel like the simple background gives no distraction from the main subjects in the painting. The you ladies dress is so bright and vibrant that she stands out with all her beauty. It makes her love emanate from the painting.
The
Hay Wain painting is also a painting of the romantic era but is English. It is considered the most famous painting of the romantic era. This is a romantic landscape unlike
The Kiss. This painting is a natural, pleasant painting to view. It shows the English country side in a peaceful depiction. You can feel the daily life these people are leading and the rolling lands that they are working. This is a depiction of the River Stour that is the split between Suffolk and Essex. I feel like the lighting is very drastic throughout the painting in a way to make you look at the entire landscape rather than just one specific image within the painting.
The Impressionist Style
Starry Night
Painted By:
Vincent Van Gogh
Way to HomePainted By:
Leonid Afremov
Starry Night is probably one of the most known paintings of Impressionist styles. This painting is definitely is a painting that gives a sense of awe and beauty. Vincent Van
Gogh is considered one of the leading painters of the Impressionist style. He struggled with mental health most of his life. Due to this, the painting
Starry Night, was created in a studio in an asylum. This painting was actually painted during the day yet depicts the night sky. The painting of the night sky seems almost fairy tale like. The swirls and bright colors are magical looking like a dream. It has so much movement that you cant keep your eyes in one spot.
Starry Night feels like a painting that you can spend an entire day looking at the night sky.
Way to Home is significantly different. It is very vibrant and loaded with multiple colors. This is an impressionist painting that oddly enough has a strong romantic feeling. You can picture walking with the love of your life down the path and sitting on the bench while cuddling. The colors encourage a happy upbeat mood. Multiple colors are inviting and just like
Starry Night it draws the eye to multiple locations. After moving to Israel
Leonid Afremov became an optimist painter. The sun of Israel influenced this painting and its bright colors. He wanted his paintings to portray beauty and happiness. Interesting fact is he graduated from an art institute and was originally going to be a teacher.

Both art styles are beautiful, but I found the impressionist style more appealing. In the first painting "The Kiss" the women does stand out because of her bright dress. I do see how it gives off romantic vibes, and how powerful their love is with the passion they have for each other. The second painting of the Romanticism art style gives off calming vibes. I agree that each section of the art work is eye-catching because of the cool colors presented. I have seen the first painting of the impressionist art style before, and I just love it; It is almost as it can be part of a children's book. I find it cool how Gogh painted this in an asylum during the day. The painting does show a lot of movement, especially in the sky. The second painting of the impressionist style is so pretty. The bright colors of the leaves and the reflection of them on the ground is so outstanding. I love the depth presented in this.
ReplyDeleteI loved your post from the impressionist style in the painting "Way to Home" by Leonid Afremov, he did indeed have a great use of color. Both styles from the era overall are great, he gives a deep sense of self-awareness and personal emotion more than the romanticism for me. The fact that he made one of his paintings due to his mental health shows a hidden emotion. Maybe the feeling of being misunderstood was his thoughts while making this painting presenting a man walking alone in the night. When he moved away to Israel there may have been a sense of self found when he became an optimist painter.
ReplyDeleteHello Alicia, You have written a very descriptive post with helpful emphasis on different aspects of each painting. I appreciate how you walk your audience through each artwork, explaining its connection to the time period and offering some perspective on the paintings' qualities. Would you like to see any of these paintings in your household? I personally adore romance paintings. However, the colors of Way To Home are vibrant and splendid, and the brush strokes depicting light falling on the leaves of the trees reminds me of when I was a sleepy child, looking through all the little rain droplets on the windows of my mother's care as we drove through the city at night. It reminds me of how all the bright white and neon lights would glitter in on me through those little droplets. I absolutely adore that painting.

DeleteI feel like the romantic paintings speak for themselves when it comes to being romantic. The painting, "The Kiss" definitely shows romanticism. But it shows it in such a way that it seems as though there is more than just a kiss present on the canvas, the two characters are kissing, but they do so very romantically, just as there is more than love for each other present, but love for their home. Many romantic paintings revolve around fighting for honor and love. The painting does keep the subject very direct and simple, the background is not complex and the two characters kissing in the painting are right up front for everyone to see. I feel like a painting is fantastic when it does stuff like this, but at the same time, I do love to see paintings where the background is more complex than the subject.
I really like the "way to home" piece. I think the vibrance of the colors creates a very inviting feel. The picture is also slightly blurred due to the painting method characteristic of the post impressionist work.
ReplyDeleteI really liked the "way to home" piece. The vibrant colors mixed and the blurring in this artwork make the painting very interesting to look at. I also think that you did a great job explaining the backgrounds of the artworks you shared.
