 Hillside Collection

This painting is an oil painting done by the famous artist Etta Benjamin Cien.  The Hillside painting viewed here is actually part of a collection. This painting was framed in Los Angeles, California. The year is unknown.

This painting is very calming and peaceful to look at. The lighting is warm and the texture is built to give dimension. The lines in this painting are soft and gives the impression of movement. You can see this in the grass where it looks like wind may be blowing through it. The movement and shading makes the small cottage stand out as the main view. It gives a feel of sturdiness. The lighting of the cottage draws your eye directly to it. It has the feel of a fish eye lens view. I personally do own this and never knew any information about it. Now that I do I have even more appreciation for the painting and pride in owning it.

  1. Alicia, I love this piece, it is very beautiful and it appeals to me a lot. I have never heard of Etta Benjamin Cien before but I will have to take a look at more of her work. I agree with you about the movement that the soft lines in the trees and grass create. It is such a great juxtaposition to the cabins, making the overall composition very interesting to look at.

  2. Hi Alicia. I agree that this beautiful painting is a great to look at; It does give off a calm and peaceful vibe. It also seems like there is a slight blur to this painting because it is not in great detail. Cein's work of art seems to present both cool and warm colors: The grass and trees being the cool colors, and the sky and house to the right being the warm colors.

  3. Hi Alicia! I also think that this is a beautiful piece to look at and I love the calm vibe that it gives. I also love that Cein was able to make the tree look like it is blowing in the wind. I have never seen that be done before so this piece really interested me.
